Live fashion illustration events are one of my favorite ways to share my art. I was so happy when DVF and Darling Magazine had me join their soiree in Santa Monica. To start, this Santa Monica shop is absolutely gorgeous and if you have seen my DVF luggage, I felt like I was walking into it! The classic DVF link pattern in black covered the walls and the hot pink velvet couch was perfect for guests to rest around me while I live painted fashion illustrations. To be surrounded by fashion while painting fashion, I couldn't ask for more! I was definitely mentally making a DVF shopping wish list as I looked around the shop between illustrations. DVF really has a way of designing pieces that I find both classy and a bit sexy at the same time, total femininity.
I have been a fan of Diane Von Furstenberg for as long as I can remember. Her story of success has been a huge inspiration to me. Darling magazine acts in the same way to inspire, support and encourage women. If you are not familiar with Darling Magazine I highly suggest you pick yourself up a copy. I still have some of their first issues I often refer back to for stories or inspiration. One of the first things that caught my eye about Darling was their use of illustrations in every issue. As an artist and illustrator, I love when a company choosing to use imaginative illustration over highly photoshopped models.
That illustration is me on the far left below! I always paint an illustration of myself initially to warm-up and give guests an example. I find guests are sometimes shy, so I am quick to take a glance at them and poise them myself in the illustration. Other guests know exactly how they want to poise or what they want me to highlight in the fashion illustration. It is always a personal challenge for me to get these notes so quickly in the 5 minute illustration but every time it is a pleasure to see the results.
Seeing the illustration pop-up on social media after the event was fun. The above and below images featured on Darling Magazine's instagram. Below is an example of a special request, the friends wanted to be illustrated together and one of them is 8 months pregnant! All fashion illustrations at this event were completed in 5 minutes and I wish I had photos of all of them. That is something I am working on remembering to do in between sketches. Usually both the guests and I are so excited to see the illustration I just hand it over before I realize I didn't get a photo. Luckily for social media I am usually able to grab enough photos from the guests sharing my illustrations of them.
Speaking of sharing, for this event we stuck with #thatsdarling and #DVFSantaMonica. I always encourage guests to tag me as well or use #kmalastudio. I am looking forward to more events as DVF Santa Monica invited me back in the future for more fashion illustrations, so stay tuned! Subscribe to be updated about live fashion illustration events. You can always commission a fashion illustration of yourself in the shop!
